Against the French, the Allied army held its position, determined to prevent a defeat.
Masséna fiercely launched his troops to avenge Imperial pride, attempting for three days to break the Allied line.
He came dangerously close to success. This was the battle where Wellington faced his closest defeat in the entire war.
The French, under the skillful Marmont, had maneuvered for a month, pushing the Allies back from the Duero’s banks.
Wellington was cornered and outmaneuvered. Would the Earl risk a final, desperate and decisive offensive to avoid retreat to Portugal?
Across two countries
This battle is singular due to take place on the very frontier. We will visit Spanish and Portuguese locations.
